GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. --

A jury found 34-year-old Greenville man guilty on multiple charges including assault on a federal officer.

Robert Gatrell Bowling was found guilty of conspiracy to pass counterfeit business checks, two counts of unlawfully possessing five or more false identification documents, two counts of aggravated identity theft, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors said Bowling and his wife, Kristen Harmon, stole mail from residential mailboxes to gather bank account and identity information. The couple then created counterfeit business checks that were passed throughout the Upstate. In order to pass the checks, Bowling and Harmon created bogus driver’s licenses.

Investigators said the couple then used the money primarily used to purchase methamphetamine and other illegal drugs.

Harmon pleaded guilty to identity theft charges in February.

Prosecutors said Bowling went on the run and continued to manufacture checks and identity documents. He was pursued on multiple occasions by members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. Marshals were forced to call off several chases because Bowling endangered the lives of civilians as he exceeded speeds of 100 mph, once passing a stopped school bus as it dropped off children.

After one chase in April 2008, marshals and Greenville County deputies found hollow-point ammunition in Bowling’s vehicle. A loaded 9 mm Glock pistol was found two days later along the chase route near State Park Road in Greenville County. Because of prior felony convictions, Bowling was prohibited from possessing weapons and/or ammunition.

On April 1, 2010, about 20 law enforcement officers with the task force converged on a trailer where Bowling was hiding out. When he saw the officers approaching, Bowling jumped into a 2010 Subaru Legacy and tried to escape, intentionally striking and injuring a special deputy U.S. marshal with the vehicle.

Bowling’s vehicle then spun out of control and hit a tree. Officers were able to pull Bowling from the vehicle and placed him under arrest.

Bowling’s total sentence could be up to 67 years.

Each conviction also carries a $250,000 fine.
