The couple then created counterfeit business checks that were passed throughout the Upstate. In order to pass the checks, Bowling and Harmon created bogus driver’s licenses.

Investigators said the couple then used the money primarily used to purchase methamphetamine and other illegal drugs.

Harmon pleaded guilty to identity theft charges in February.

Prosecutors said Bowling went on the run and continued to manufacture checks and identity documents. He was pursued on multiple occasions by members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. Marshals were forced to call off several chases because Bowling endangered the lives of civilians as he exceeded speeds of 100 mph, once passing a stopped school bus as it dropped off children.

After one chase in April 2008, marshals and Greenville County deputies found hollow-point ammunition in Bowling’s vehicle. A loaded 9 mm Glock pistol was found two days later along the chase route near State Park Road in Greenville County. Because of prior felony convictions, Bowling was prohibited from possessing weapons and/or ammunition.

On April 1, 2010, about 20 law enforcement officers with the task force converged on a trailer where Bowling was hiding out. When he saw the officers approaching, Bowling jumped into a 2010 Subaru Legacy and tried to escape, intentionally striking and injuring a special deputy U.S. marshal with the vehicle.

Bowling’s vehicle then spun out of control and hit a tree. Officers were able to pull Bowling from the vehicle and placed him under arrest.

Bowling’s total sentence could be up to 67 years.

Each conviction also carries a $250,000 fine.

Copyright 2010 by WYFF4.com. PT>
BY JULIE R JOHNSON
Corning Observer, Calif.

Tehama County Sheriff Clay Parker is passionate about citizens' rights to bear arms.

So much so, he is the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit recently filed in Sacramento by the National Rifle Association/California Rifle and Pistol Association Foundation Legal Action Project challenging state Assembly Bill 962.

When the bill was signed into law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last year, the governor said it "requires vendors of handgun ammunition to keep a log of information on handgun ammunition sales, store ammunition in a safe and secure manner, and require the face-to-face transfer of ammunition sales."

"The bill is too broad," Parker said. "What is handgun ammunition? If you ask, no one could tell you. Some people may say a .357 shell is handgun ammunition, but I have a .357 rifle. This bill has to be defined better."

This isn't the first time Parker has taken action on the issue of firearms legislation. He took an active part in the lawsuit against Chicago's long-standing ban on handguns, a case that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The court struck down the ban in June.

"I will continue to fight laws infringing a citizen's right to bear arms," Parker stated. "If a law could really do some good, okay. But when they pass laws affecting law abiding citizen's not the criminals, that is not OK."

The Foundation's lawsuit has been in the works ever since AB 962 passed and a request for an injunction will be filed shortly, in an effort to stop the bill's ammunition sales registration requirements (which includes fingerprinting), and the ban on mail order ammunition purchases before those provision take effect on Feb. 1, 2000, reported the foundation, which is funding the lawsuit.

Proponents of Bill 962 say the legislation was needed to close loop holes in existing firearms laws.

Assemblyman Kevin De Leon, who sponsored the bill, has stated, "a gun without ammunition is like a syringe without the drug."

According to the bill's introduction, "Existing law requires the Department of Justice to maintain records pertaining to firearms transactions. This bill would require the department to maintain additional information relating to ammunition transfers and licensed handgun ammunition vendors, as specified."

Tim Ross, an employee of Hatfield's Ace Hardware, which sells firearms and ammunition, said he agrees with Parker that the language of the bill is too broad.

"There is a lot of firearms ammunition that is interchangeable between pistols and rifles," Ross said. "Another issue we have with the bill is the record keeping. For every box of ammunition we sell we will have to keep fingerprint, driver's license, and other information on our records for who knows how long and that will create an unimaginable paper trail headache."

The Foundation states its attorneys will continue to fight against ill-conceived gun control laws and ordinances.

McClatchy-Tribune News Service

	<div cla

http://www.officer.com/web/online/Top-News-Stories/Calif-County-Sheriff-Leads-Gun-Rights-Lawsuit/1$53678

Officials said the woman tried to hit the people with her car. They were able to get out of the way and were not injured.

Ventura County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Jim Aguirre said the people called 911, reported the incident and said they knew the woman was very distraught.

CHP Officer Brandon Mumme responded to the call, and when he arrived, the driver rammed her car into his vehicle, said Sheriff's Capt. Stephen Wade. The officer was able to make an evasive move, but the woman's car struck the rear passenger side of the CHP car.

After the crash, the driver -- Cheree Sanker, 33, of Fillmore -- remained in her vehicle, threatening to kill herself with a knife, Wade said. CHP officers and Sheriff's deputies convinced her to relinquish the knife and leave the vehicle, Wade said.

Officers ultimately removed her from the car at gunpoint.

Sanker was arrested and taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where she was admitted for treatment of a broken leg and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Wade said.

Mumme, who works out of the CHP's Moorpark station, complained of pain to his abdomen. He was also taken to a local hospital.

The incident remained under investigation today.

Numerous CHP units, along with Ventura County Sheriff's Department deputies and Ventura County firefighters and paramedics responded to the incident. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office will help patrol Oak Hill until the police officers are ready.

Five Oak Hill police officers normally patrol a 10.5 square-mile area in south Volusia County, but that had to be stopped after Police Chief Diane Young realized her officers hadn?t received proper certification on the use of their guns.

"It's one of those things that Diane didn?t know when she took office and it came back to haunt her," Oak Hill City Commissioner Lynn Hyatt said.

Chief Young quickly notified the Volusia County Sheriff's Office and they agreed to take over patrols and retrain Oak Hill's police officers.

"We have a mutual aid agreement and the sheriff agreed to come down and provide services for our city," Chief Young said.

For more than 24 hours, the Oak Hill officers were parked at the department instead of patrolling the streets. PT>
By JIM GOMEZ
Associated Press Writer

     MANILA, Philippines --

Philippine police tracked down a suspect in a series of grisly robberies and killings with the help of his Facebook account, officials said Tuesday.

Mark Dizon, a 28-year-old computer technician, did not resist when arrested Tuesday while talking with his father in a public square in northern San Fernando city, police Senior Superintendent Danilo Bautista said.

He is accused of killing nine people - six Filipinos, an American, a Canadian and a Briton - in three different robberies at hotels and homes this month in Angeles city. The area, near the former U.S.-run Clark Air Force Base some 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Manila, is home to many retired expatriates.

Dizon, who is from a well-off family and according to police had a fascination with guns, was Facebook friends with the daughter of one of the victims. A friend of her family showed his photo on the popular social networking site to witnesses to help identify him, police said.

"He was fond of computers and this gave him away," Bautista told The Associated Press.

Murder charges will soon be filed against Dizon, who denied involvement in the killings, Bautista said.

The string of deadly robberies started July 12, when Canadian Geoffrey Alan Bennun, 60, and his Filipino girlfriend were shot to death after a robber broke into their hotel room.

Four days later, Briton James Bolton Porter, 51, and his girlfriend were killed by a gunman in their house in Angeles' Malabanas village, police said.

Dizon allegedly later pawned some of the possessions taken from Bennun, including a laptop and a cell phone, Bautista said, adding investigators have secured pawnshop records and close-circuit television camera footage showing him with the stolen objects in the shop.

Last week, a gunman killed American Albert Mitchell, a 70-year-old World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force, along with his Filipino wife, Janet, 53, and three Filipino staff inside their Angeles home, Bautista said.

In the last killing, the fleeing gunman was seen by a village guard and a motorcycle taxi driver, who later described him to investigators, according to police.

After hearing descriptions of the suspect, a family friend of the Mitchells looked up Dizon's Facebook page - the Mitchells' daughter was one of his friends on the site. He showed the Facebook profile photo to the witnesses, who identified him as the man fleeing they saw, Bautista said.

He added that the same pistol was used in all the killings, linking Dizon to the other two crimes.

Copyright 2008 The Associated Press.
